YFC members from Pembrokeshire were among the stars of the show at the 40th Wales YFC Eisteddfod, which attracted 800 competitors from all over Wales.
The even at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, on Saturday, November 19, was hosted by the Carmarthenshire Federation.
During the day members competed in a variety of competitions including singing, recitation and humorous items, as well as homework competitions that included literacy, prose and art.
The competitions were held throughout the day and the overall winning federation was the Pembrokeshire’s Federation and they took home the Mansel Charles Shield with 47 points. In second place, with 44 points, were the hosts, county Carmarthenshire Federation.
Winning the Eisteddfod Chair was Iestyn Tyne, member of Godre’r Eifl, Eryri for his poem. Iestyn is a second-year student at Aberystwyth University studying Welsh. The impressive chair was made by Bedwyn Rees, a past member of Capel Iwan YFC, Carmarthenshire, and kindly sponsored by Hefin Jones, Llanarthne.
For the first time in YFC history a crown was presented to the winner of the prose competition. Naomi Seren Nicolas won the prize from Llys-y-fran YFC, Pembrokshire. Naomi is also a student at Aberystwyth University, in her last year, studying Welsh and Drama. Dylan Bowen, past member of Capel Iwan YFC, created the crown, which was sponsored by Carmarthenshire FUW.
Winning first prize in the choir competition and taking home the Vale of Towy Cup was Meirionnydd YFC. Jessica Robinson of Pembrokeshire YFC won the Ardudwy Cup for being the best music soloist in the music section. The Menter Iaith Sir Benfro Challenge Trophy, awarded to the best one-voice party was won by the Llys-y-Fran YFC, Pembrokeshire.
Sion Jenkins, from Pembrokeshire YFC, was the best individual in the recitation section and he took home the Wales YFC Cup. Iestyn Tyne and Alun Jones Williams, Eryri YFC, won the contemporary song competition and they were awarded the Meinir Richards Cup. The Joy Cornock Cup, for the most promising individual in the Eisteddfod, was awarded to Dyfan Parry Jones, Montgomery YFC.
In the federation award section, Clwyd won the Dyffryn Nantlle Shield for the highest points in the Cerdd Dant section, and winning the Denbighshire Farmers’ Union of Wales trophy for winning the homework section were Ceredigion YFC. The Elonwy Phillips Trophy, which is awarded to the winning federation in the stage section, was also won by the Pembrokeshire Federation.
