Now fully enjoying all the many excellent facilities provided at Trimsaran's Ffos Las racecourse, a highly significant feature of this end-of-season Llandyfaelog and District show has for many years been the dairy cattle "champion of champions" challenge, with qualifiers from all the earlier South Wales shows, including the Royal Welsh, allowed to come forward.

Holsteins dominate the main section with the award for the best cow going to the home bred six weeks calved fourth calver, Gatrog Bolton Jingles, shown by Elwyn, Cheryl and Anwen Thomas who also took the heifer prize with the March calved Gatrog Joseph Ghost.

Richard and Bethan Thomas and family were awarded the junior championship with their maiden heifer, Wyndford Mineio Teggy, and they also claimed the any other dairy breed prizes with their freshly calved Brown Swiss second calver, Moorport Manchester Agatha, and the Jersey heifer, Bluegrass Snowman Cornflower.

In the general show classes Holstein breeders Eifion, Mary and Wyn Jones dominated the dairy breeds with their in calf cow, Feithy Dude Ruth due next month, the August called heifer Feithy Legend Lillian and the April born calf, Feithy van dal Texie.

Iestyn Richards, 14, headed the sheep entries with his yearling pedigree Beulah speckled face ram ahead of Julie Earle with her pedigree Welsh mountain ram that had previously won championships in Merioneth, Gower and Lampeter shows. The roup award went to Adrian and Wendy Evans with their Beltex trio.

A Landrace sow carrying her second litter took best in the pig section for Gerallt, Joyce and Llyr Owens.

After many years of annually having to find a new site for their popular summer show the bold decision of society officials to move to the weather security of Ffos Las really paid off this year as several torrential showers failed to deter the many visitors during the day who made full use of the ample covered accommodation – the only casualty being the horse and pony section which had to be called off due to ground conditions.
