Artisan butchers from different parts of Wales went head to head this month for the title of Welsh Butcher Shop of the Year, at a UK-wide award ceremony.

At a glitzy ceremony at London’s County Hall, N S James of Raglan, Edwards of Conwy and Eynon’s of St Clears eagerly anticipated the result. And it was the ‘Gogs’ who came out on top, with Ieuan Edwards’s famous Traditional Butchers’ Shop being crowned the best in Wales.

The event was hosted by Meat Trades Journal and sponsored by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).

HCC’s market development officer Kirstie Jones said, “HCC supports independent butchers all year round through point-of-sale material and other promotions through our Welsh lamb and Welsh beef butchers’ club.

“Welsh butchers have had great success in recent times, with HCC scholar Peter Rushforth being crowned UK Young Butcher of the Year in 2016.”

Ieuan Edwards, owner of Edwards of Conwy said: “Winning this latest accolade has generated a real ‘buzz’ within the business, our loyal customers are also delighted. As strong supporters of PGI Welsh lamb and beef it’s a huge honour to be crowned Best Welsh Butcher 2017.”
