Winners of the South Wales Jersey Breeders 2017 Herds competition have been announced with a Laugharne her taking the top accolade.

Judge Seimon Thomas found his best herd at Glanmor (Helen and Gary Cox) who also provided the best bull, cow, senior progeny youngstock (production/ inspection) and bull progeny.

Leading dam and daughter was Gwenlas GG Florence and her yearling heifer at the Felin herd of Ioan Harries at Llanon. Best milking heifer and judges' choice of best animal viewed was Carwyn Valentinos Ophelia exhibited by the Griffiths family of Penlan, New Moat.

New herd winners and senior maiden winner went to Elan Thomas’s Clarity herd at Penygraig, Meidrim, with Carps Jerseys winning the junior yearling section.

Junior bull progeny honours went to the Batchelor’s Chapel herd at Hundleton, rounding off an excellent competition with the judge full of praise for the overall quality and the kind welcome received.

Future events include a proposed breeding workshop in September about the best type of breeding cow.

There will hopefully be a classifier and a commercial milk producer present to promote debate but a volunteer is required to host this event which should be of interest to all breeders.

Anyone willing to assist with hosting this event should contact the secretary – all that is needed are cows in a field for viewing and discussion.

Upcomign events include the South Wales All Breeds Calf Show at Carmarthen on September 16; the National Jersey Show at Bath & West showground, Shepton Mallet on October 4 to be followed by the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show at Malvern on October 13- 15 and the Welsh Dairy Show at Carmarthen on October 24.

A special Christmas party is also planned on Friday, December 15.
