TIME is running out for a campaign to save Wales’ first and largest community owned farm.

Ffarm Moelyci, in Tregarth, north Wales, sits on 340 acres of rich grassland including its own mountain, is up for sale and in danger of being lost from community ownership.

Campaigners attempting to raise money to buy the property say most of the farm is so ecologically significant it has been designated SSSI for grassland ecology and waxcap fungi.

Since 2003 it has been home to many community activities and local enterprises. Gwynedd’s largest allotments group, a hugely popular farm shop and café – a local favourite destination and the recently refurbished barn have been opened for use as a teaching and events space, hosting events from yoga to breadmaking and even kids’ parties. To settle the debts of the past and pay the mortgage off, the farm has to be sold on the open market and with vacant possession.

"Having given an opportunity to thousands of individuals to learn skills, gain employment and inspire some to go on and set up businesses there is a real danger that future generations won’t have the same chances," said Moelyci's Sam Kennerley.

"We’re looking for sympathetic buyers and supporters who see the true value of community to step forward."

This weekend sees an open day at the farm on Saturday between 10am and 4pm in a bid to spread the message. The café and shop also open Wednesdays to Sundays (from 11am).

Deadline for a bid to buy is November 17.
