Usk Young Farmers’ Club achieved tremendous results at the Gwent YFC county public speaking competition, held at County Hall, with the club winning both the junior and senior competitions.

In the junior public speaking competition Dafydd Brown, Alys Warman and Joseff North took first place with Alys Warman winning best proposer of a vote of thanks, Dafydd wining second best chairman and Joseff winning second best speaker.

Abergavenny YFC came second as a team and with two Usk teams entered, the other team took home third place, made up of Seren North, Lucy Child and Elinor North, who was named best chairman while Seren won second best proposer of a vote of thanks.

In the senior after dinner speaking competition, it was another Usk victory, with Laura Bowyer, Ruby John, Laura Morgan, Will Morgan and Abbie Williams going home with the best team title. This was only the fourth time Usk has won best senior team in the 70-year history of the cup, having also won it in 2017.

On top of this, Laura Bowyer won best speaker while Abbie Williams came third. Ruby John won best supporting speaker in her role as ‘responder to the speaker’. Laura Morgan came second place as chairman.

Angharad Gwillim, chairman of Usk YFC, said: “Congratulations to all members who competed. Public speaking is one of the many important life skills which YFC teaches. Our success wouldn’t be possible though without the support and training from past and present members, so a big thank you must go to all who were involved.”
