LOWER speed limits could be put in place near 11 more Pembrokeshire schools - including Ysgol y Frenni and Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych
A report by county council head of transportation Darren Thomas showed that the majority of schools already had a 20pmh zone or signs unless there were other special measures in place such as off-street roadways, parking or stand-alone walking and cycling facilities.
Mr Thomas’ report recommended that any Council adopted road outside the main entrance or exit of any school in Pembrokeshire has a limit of 20mph.
To ensure a 20mph zone, physical measures are put in place, the committee heard, but it was also possible to install 20mph signs but this does not guarantee that it would be adhered to.
It would cost in the region of £560,000 and grant funding is sought and will continue to be applied for to support any further projects. Installing signs at the 11 schools would cost in the region of £300,000.
The 11 schools include Llangwm’s new school, Broad Haven School, Cosheston VC School, Puncheston Community Primary School / Ysgol Camel, Wolfscastle Community Primary School / Ysgol Cas-blaidd and Ysgol Llanychllwydog.
Letterston, Monkton, and Ysgol y Frenni and Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych are included in this year’s programme for 20mph zones and pedestrian safety improvements are planned for Mary Immaculate.
The committee agreed to recommend to cabinet that appropriate funding was sought to provide measures at the remaining schools and would also take into consideration Welsh Government proposals for an all Wales 20mph in development.
