Breeders turned out in force for the first Multi Breed Calf Show at Carmarthen.
There were entries from 11 Herefords exhibitors and a total of 30 cattle entered, many being new entrants to the breed.
This was a show to encourage new entrants to showcase their calves and to get to know existing members.
Dyfed Hereford Breeders Club were delighted to receive an invitation from the Welsh Simmental Club to start a calf show.
After a lot of organising and cooperation from different breeds the Multi Breed Calf Show was born comprising of Hereford, Simmental and Welsh Black calves. Despite the weather exhibitors turned out and around 50 calves were beautifully turned out.
The day had a festive feel with the smell of warm mulled wine, Christmas cake and mince pies filling the shed. The Herefords were the first in the ring judged by Dyfed Hereford Breeders Club members Ron Welch and Linda Allen from Falcondale Herefords sharing the task.
The supreme champion was hotly contested by two newcomers to the breed with D & B Hughes’s Olde Town 1 Napoleon taking top honours with their able stockman Richard Hughes at the helm.
Horeb Queen Bee from R L Rees with Ffion Rees leading, again newcomers to the breed took Reserve Supreme Champion. The young handlers all did themselves proud with Eifion James taking first and Gruffydd David Phillips Williams coming a very close second.
Organisers are confident this successful and encouraging start will secure the show's future and thanked exhibitors, organisers, sponsors, caterers, Carmarthen Market and all the support from Hereford House.
