A Powys farmer died when he was hit by a falling feed bin during a delivery last month, an inquest has heard.

Iwan Evans, aged 78, died from injuries sustained from the accident on Cleiriau Isaf Farm, in Aberhosan, near Machynlleth on Friday, February 17, while his son Dafydd Evans was seriously injured.

An inquest opening heard that at approximately 4.45pm, a haulage company had delivered animal feed into a free-standing animal feed bin that was in the sheep barn on the farm.

Immediately after the feed was offloaded into the bin, the structure and its contents spilled over.

Mr Evans was described as a beloved husband to Annwen and a loving father to Meleri, Ellyw and Dafydd in a family tribute last week:

Iwan Evans was standing underneath the bin, while his son was standing to the right of the bin, as the contents hit him with force and knocked him face down.

According to the coroner’s report, the haulage driver tried to remove the bin from Mr Evans and his son, using a farm vehicles and chains to try and move the structure.

The driver then ran a short distance to the farm house, alerting Mrs Evans who then contacted the emergency services.

Crews arrived on the scene and carried out CPR before pronouncing Mr Evans deceased at the scene at 6.24pm.

Dafydd Evans, aged 42, was rushed to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for treatment.

Speaking shortly after the incident, Glantwymyn councillor Cllr Elwyn Vaughan said: “It was a huge shock to hear such sad news.

“In this close-knit agricultural community, it’s news that is deeply felt, especially for such a highly respected family.

“The Evans are one of the region’s oldest family names and well known throughout the vicinity.

“Beyond the family name Dafydd is well known for being such a valued member of the community, especially from his work with the community council and participation in the choir.

“Of course we wish him well and hope for the best in the coming days, while the community will be offering its full support.”

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at a farm in the Aberhosan area of Machynlleth on Friday evening, 17 February 2023.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious. A 42-year old man is in hospital with serious injuries.

"The Health and Safety Executive and HM Coroner have been informed. Our thoughts are with the family who are receiving specialist support.”
