A new lesson in an old agricultural practice was held at a Machynlleth community garden.

Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens held a scything workshop recently, giving participants a lesson in the ancient farming skill.

The workshop was led by Danny Hodgson and Helene Ducrotoy from Hand Powered, a group that offers tuition on traditional skills to help people manage their land in an ecologically friendly way.

The Hand Powered team gave attendees a crash course in the theory of scything, and get a chance to practice with expert supervision on the Gerddi meadow.

A spokesperson for Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens stated on social media: “We had a great time on Saturday learning about the art of scything with Danny and Helene from 'Hand Powered'.

“We learned about setting up and sharpening scythes, mastering the physical technique, and why we should actually cut meadows more often to increase biodiversity. Thanks to all who came.”
