IMAGES of the Wrexham Butchers Market refurbishment have been shared to social media to highlight the progress that has been made.
SWG Construction, based in Welshpool, is in the process of rejuvenating the grade II listed building in Wrexham as part of the cities Regeneration Scheme.
Plans for the multi-million pound redevelopment of the historic market were approved by Wrexham Council's planning department in January 2023.
The scope of the project includes a comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrade, including the installation of a new Building Management System (BMS), roof repairs, stonework repairs, and the replacement or refurbishment of the historic shop fronts.
The market lies in the heart of Wrexham and forms part of the Townscape Heritage Scheme funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Welsh Government and Wrexham Council's capital programme.
Sadly, GC Hughes Butcher closed at the end of September 2023 amid the building works at the market, leaving just Tracey’s Café the only business still based there as the redevelopment takes place.
All other traders have temporarily relocated to units in Queens Square until the work has been completed.
SWG Group has now shared updated images of the progress made.
The company confirmed the following:

We have formed an access ramp to enable the continuity of business at Tracey’s Café.

New steel support for the building has been installed at what will be the new Café space.

Internal high-level access scaffolding and temporary propping are in place.

Strip-out and joinery works are well underway.

Installed a new power supply to feed the entire building.

A new drainage system is being put in to facilitate new outlets.

We are removing the existing high-level Radial Gas Heating System.

First Fix M&E is taking place.

Works on new MF ceilings have commenced.

Cellars which will become storage units for the outlets have been cleared, and the base unit was cast ready for the new lift installation.

The SWG team is liaising closely with architects and conservation officers.
SWG Group was awarded the reconstruction contract on behalf of the Wrexham Council last year.
A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: "The Butchers Market is a real asset to Wrexham town and contributes significantly to the character and rich narrative of the remaining historic centre.
"It’s vital these buildings are repaired and refurbished to ensure their continued use and contribution to the historic townscape."
