RAIN failed to dampen spirits as Llanbister Show, the first show of the Powys county season, was held on bank holiday Monday, May 27.

A large crowd turned out to enjoy displays such as the Wye Valley Axemen, Wye Valley Falconry and the traditional attractions.

The carriage driving and a few stalls were cancelled but all the regular activities like crafts, cookery, produce, art and photography, the horse show, jumping, dog, sheep and pig shows,  children's athletics, vintage and custom vehicles went ahead as usual, and poultry were welcome in the fur ’n’ feather competition after several years hampered by avian flu restrictions.

There was a wide variety of trade and community stalls and the raffle proved popular as ever, helped by some exceptionally generous prize donations from local businesses and individuals.

Refreshment and a welcome refuge from the elements was provided in the tea tent through the sterling efforts of Cantal YFC, with a barbecue and impressive range of cakes and sandwiches on offer.

A well-attended car treasure hunt around the area and a speed shearing competition at Llanbister Hall took place the day before.

The show thanks visitors for their co-operation with new regulations which require all organisations, including even small shows, to sort and recycle all waste, and Powys County Council for providing bins.

Organisers were pleased with the outcome of the day, especially as they were under great pressure owing to a shortage of volunteers, both on and ahead of show day.

A feedback meeting will be held at Llanbister Community Hub at 7.30pm on Tuesday, June 11, which participants are especially urged to attend as well as anyone who is interested in getting involved for next year.

Results of the various competitions and more photographs will be published on Facebook when available.
