WITH sheep rustling costing the industry in Wales a staggering £700,000 in 2011, Welsh farmers are being urged to take action to protect their livestock.

Figures released by NFU Mutual, based on insurance claims, show 69,000 sheep worth more than £6million were stolen across the UK in 2011.

With such a sharp rise in sheep rustling, farmers are being urged to take preventative measures to protect their livestock.

Along with staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to the police, farmers should ensure gates are completely secure with strong fences and gates fitted with locks. Feeding ewes away from roadside locations and varying feed times each day could also help prevent sheep rustling.

Distinguishing sheep with branding fluid is a possible deterrent that could help secure your flock, making it easier to spot them, and making them less appealing to rustlers.
