THE positive outlook of the next generation of Welsh farmers is set to serve the industry well in the future.

Representatives from the Future Farmers of Wales met minister for Natural Resources and Food, Alun Davies, to discuss key issues impacting on the industry at the moment such as CAP reform and the recent severe weather in parts of Wales.

Mr Davies said the meeting gave him real confidence in the future leadership of Welsh agriculture.

“The Future Farmers of Wales provide a strong voice on behalf of the next generation,”

said the minister.

“I was pleased to hear their views and ideas on the major matters affecting the industry and to share with them my vision for an industry, and individual businesses within that industry, that are as efficient, profitable and professionally managed as they can possibly be. I particularly welcome the positive outlook of the young people involved; an outlook that will serve the industry well in the future.

“Farming today is about a lot more than animal husbandry.

Education, training and especially mentoring from experienced individuals within the industry is vital to ensure our next generation of farmers are properly equipped to run thriving, market focused businesses.”

In order to improve the opportunities and support available to young farmers in Wales, the minister has established a review of the Welsh Government’s Young Entrants Support Scheme (YESS).

Mr Davies added: “YESS has been well received and widely supported by farmers in Wales and been the subject of considerable interest from Governments elsewhere in Europe.

“I am keen to build on the evident success of YESS and have set in motion arrangements to review and improve the existing scheme.”

Malcolm Thomas, former NFU director of business services, membership and regions will lead the review and report his findings in June.

Since its launch in 2010, 366 young and new entrant farmers have benefited from YESS, receiving £5.1million in financial support, along with mentoring and business THERE was Welsh success at the training.
