A Pembrokeshire man is at the forefront of developing a new sport for disabled riders.

Michael Butcher, a lecturer in equine studies based at Bowlings Riding School, Haverfordwest, has been appointed head coach of showjumping for the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).

Mr Butcher said: “Although RDA was set up more than 40 years ago the development of showjumping as a specific activity has always been contentious due to the inevitable safety issues and training needs it demands.”

However, para-equestrian showjumping is set to take place in international competition soon, so the RDA has set up a working committee to develop showjumping, headed by Mr Butcher.

Mr Butcher has now achieved the highest coaching qualification offered by British Showjumping in preparation for his role.

Mr Butcher added: “I look forward to working with experienced RDA coaches, who with valuable input from RDA physiotherapists, will ensure the highest standard of delivery is made available to all riders, from novice to potential paralympians.”
