Pembrokeshire athletes entered into the 2020 Swyd Triathlon have had their entries deferred - but organisers will also be laying on an additional race for them free of charge.

All or Nothing Events had scheduled this year's Sprint and Standard Distance Triathlon, part of the Welsh Series, in the area of Barry Island for Sunday, May 24,

A number of local competitors had opted to travel to Cardiff to take part, some as part of their preparation for Ironman Wales in September, but this week received an e-mail confirming the inevitable.

"Based on the guidance from the British Triathlon Federation we are not able to deliver the race in May," it read.

"Without a permit we will not race.

"All 2020 race places will roll automatically to the 2021 date which will be as close to the original date as possible - tide dependent."

However, the company have also pledged to host an aquathalon this September, free of charge, so that those who will miss out on the Swyd Triathlon will have something to train for and focus on.

"If we can permit and government guidelines enable us to we are going to deliver a smaller event - and this event is a freebie from us to you," organisers said.

"We can't close the roads so we have decided to take the bike element out and deliver an aquathalon at Barry Island. We feel it's important to try and do something to maintain our links together."

Athletes were told they were automatically entered into this event, and participating won't affect their place in the full event in 2021.

The swim will be over 750m and the run 4.5km.

"Unfortunately there will be no medals, there will be no prizes and there will be no podium - but there will be fun, much needed smiles and there will hopefully be laughter as we can all enjoy being out and racing again."
